Latinos Unidos UFCW Canada Founding Conference a big success

UFCW Canada members from across Canada participated in Latinos Unidos UFCW Canada Founding Conference last Thursday September 10, 2009.

Some traveled as far from BC, Winnipeg and Quebec; while others traveled from within the province of Ontario to be part of this historic event.

The conference was created to promote issues concerning our brothers and sisters of Latin origin and to create a space in which members can voice their opinion and have an opportunity to engage different Latino communities in Canada.

During the conference our brother and President of UFCW Canada Wayne Hanley was elected Honorary Chair of this new formed coalition for all the contributions and support to this particular community.

We encourage all our brothers and sisters within the UFCW Canada membership to contact us for more information about this newly formed coalition and how to become part of it.

Newly formed Latinos Unidos UFCW Canada has the largest presence at LATUC Conference

Members of the newly formed Latinos Unidos UFCW Canada coalition also participated in the Latin American Trade Unionists Coalition Conference (LATUC). Latinos Unidos UFCW Canada had the largest delegation attending the conference, the most of all other organizations, confirming once more the commitment of this organization to the struggles of the different Latin communities of Canada.

Throughout the event, participants had the opportunity to voice opinions, concerns, and call for action on different issues regarding the state of the Latino communities in Canada.

LATUC is a newly formed coalition of Canadian union members of Latin American heritage. It is an active network of men and women, workers that self-identify as Latin American from across the Canadian labour movement spectrum. LATUC includes members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, International Association of Machinists, United Steelworkers, and United Food and Commercial Workers. It seeks to strengthen the voice of Canadian Latin American workers within the labour movement in Canada.

AWA and UFCW Canada releases 2008 – 2009 Report on the “Status of Migrant Farm Workers in Canada”

Hot off the press, copies of the reports are in the process of being delivered to the different ministers and government officials across Canada and Mexico.

The first report was first created back in 2002 to document the status of migrant farm workers in this country. Since then the report has become more comprehensive and many organizations, the media and even government officials look for it to get themselves informed about the issues surrounding these workers. The report comes in English, French and Spanish.

Keep checking our AWA website for the electronic version of the report. Each of the nine AWA centres across Canada will also have hard copies available to everyone interested in reading it. Follow this link to find information about your closest AWA centre.
